When genetic changes to the virus occur over time, the SARS-CoV-2 virus begins to form genetic lineages. Just as a family has a family tree, the SARS-CoV-2 virus can be mapped in the same way. Sometimes the branches of this tree have different attributes that change the speed at which the virus spreads, or the severity of the disease that causes it, or the effectiveness of treatments against it. Scientists call viruses with these changes “variants.” They are still sars-CoV-2, but may behave differently. Intermountain is also monitoring the situation.
